Preserving, exploring and explaining local history.
Protective wall.
The „Feldbach Tabor“ was built as a fortification in the second half of the 15th century around the church of the southeast Styrian town of Feldbach. The wall featured battlements and embrasures, and on the inner side of the wall, eleven small, two- to three-storey so-called „Gaden“ or „Tabor cottages“ were built. These had vaulted cellars, living rooms, storage areas and a stable. During the great Feldbach witch trial (1673-1675), the Tabor served as a prison for those accused of witchcraft. After it lost its defensive function in the 18th century, the Tabor was used for peaceful purposes. Its cottages were used as schoolrooms and storage rooms and as vegetable and ice cellars.
‘How it used to be’
With the opening of the Feldbach Local History Museum in 1952, the Tabor saw a new lease of life. Today, the former fortifications house a diverse museum with several sections. These trace the history of Eastern Styria from the Stone Age right up to the recent past. Across an exhibition area of around 1,300 square metres, a total of twelve different exhibitions are presented in 41 rooms. The museum’s mission is to collect, preserve, research, vividly present and make accessible to the public the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of South-East Styria. Activities for adults: Special exhibition tour, duration approx. 60 mins. Activities for children – A journey back in time
