Cmurek Castle – Museum of Madness, Trate

The medieval Cmurek Castle, home to the Museum of Madness, stands high above the Mura River on the Slovenian-Austrian border. In a Renaissance setting, it reveals 880 years of history, the legacy of a former psychiatric institution, and the richness of the Mura River. Together, we reflect on the boundaries of madness.

History

Cmurek Castle is one of the five oldest preserved castles in Slovenia. It was first mentioned in 1145, reflecting its exceptional historical and cultural value. Its Renaissance courtyard with arcades, painted wooden ceilings, and remnants of Romanesque elements reveal a rich architectural heritage.

After World War II, the castle became an institution for people with mental and neurological illnesses, whose legacy is now presented in the Museum of Madness. This unique museum, on a European scale, invites visitors to reflect on madness while offering an unforgettable experience at the intersection of history, culture, and the natural heritage of the Mura River.

Exhibitions

Cmurek Castle – Museum of Madness features 14 permanent exhibitions divided into three thematic sections:

  • Tracing Madness – history of the former psychiatric institution, personal stories, and artistic perspectives on madness
  • Tracing Cmurek’s Dynamic History – architectural and cultural heritage of the castle and its surroundings
  • Tracing the European Amazon – river heritage of the Mura, from fossils to conservation efforts

Each year, up to two temporary exhibitions complement the museum’s rich and layered narrative.

Additional Information

The museum can only be visited with a guided tour, available in Slovenian, German, and English. We welcome organized groups and offer professional meetings and team-building programs.
