History

The period from the 15th to the 18th century was marked by ongoing armed raids and military conflicts with Hungarian rebels and the Ottoman Empire for the duchies of Styria, Carinthia and Carniola, known as ‘Inner Austria’. Against this backdrop, the Styrian estates had the ‘provincial armoury’ built in the royal seat of Graz in the mid-17th century. As an arms depot, it became the most important equipment centre in the south-east of the Habsburg Empire.

With the decline of armed conflicts in the 18th century, the armoury lost its importance. The provincial estates requested that it be preserved as a ‘monument to the history of the province’. In 1882, the armoury was opened to the public for the first time. With its incorporation into the Joanneum, founded in 1811, it was finally turned into a museum at the end of the 19th century. Today, with around 32,000 objects covering an area of 2,000 square metres and a largely unchanged layout, the Provincial Armoury is considered the largest preserved historical armoury in the world.

Description of the complex

The Landeszeughaus is a five-storey building located on Herrengasse in the centre of Graz. Directly adjacent to it is the Landhaus, the former seat of the Styrian provincial parliament and now the seat of the Styrian provincial government.
Designed as a sober, functional building, the Graz Provincial Armoury was only given a representative design on the façade facing Herrengasse.

Offer

Guided tours are offered daily during opening hours in German and English. In order to make the building more accessible to an international audience, the range of languages available for the accompanying booklets has been gradually expanded in recent years. Three languages were added in 2024 alone. Accompanying booklets are currently available free of charge in eleven languages: German, English, Italian, French, Spanish, Slovenian, Croatian, Polish, Czech, Russian and Hungarian. An audio guide is also available in German and English.
