SInce 1973 the Lenday Gallery-Museum has been located in Lendava Castle. The museum has a number of collections depicting the history of the region and the city of Lendava, and the gallery regularly mounts interesting art exhibitions.
The name Lower Limbach (Lendava) is mentioned clearly for the first time in a document dating to1192 in connection with a lawsuit involving the pious Knight Hahold. Lendava Castle is one of the most important historical monuments of the region, and is mentioned in the 12th century as a fortress on a hill above the river Lendava near today’s border with Hungary.
The castle was mentioned as belonging to the Hungarian noble family Bánffy and continued in their possession until the middle of the 17th century. Under Nicholas Banffy VI. a large number of Protestant preachers and scholars lived at the castle and authored important literary and religious works of the Reformation. The Turks brought significant changes to the life of the city. Despite being besieged numerous times, Lower Limbach Castle and the town of Lent never fell into Turkish hands. After the decline of the Bánffy family, the lands of the city were inherited through the female line by the Nádasdy family. The Nádasdy period lasted only 25 years, because Ferenc Nádasdy was executed in Vienna in 1671 as punishment for his participation in a conspiracy . After that, the Lower Limbach lands reverted to the crown.
Today, Lendava Castle is a massive two-storey building with a mansard roof and a beautiful view of the city of Lendava. The walls are supported by massive buttresses, and the southwest facade is emphasized by a central tower. The municipalityof Lendava now owns the castle. Since 1973 it has been managed by the Lendava Gallery-Museum.

The aim of the Lendava Gallery-Museum is to gain an international reputation, which is why they endeavor to build a major center of the visual arts in Lendava and to exhibit works of world-famous artists. In recent years works of the likes of Rembrandt, Picasso, Dalí, Miró, Chagall, Vasarely, Kokoschka, Mucha and others have been exhibited in Lendavy Castle.
