The castle, whose oldest walls were built from romanesque dressed stones, is considered to be the secular nucleus of the city of Hartberg. Located in the city center, the castle dates back at least to the year 1147, when the first mention is made of a fortification in Hartberg. Acquired in 1572 from the family of the later Dukes of Paar and rebuilt in Renaissance style, it was extended by an arcaded tract in the 17th century.
The city of Hartberg received the Geramb Rose Award for the successful reconstruction of the castle. But visit our castle and see for yourself!
Modern museum in a old structure.
Since October 6th, 1988, the Hartberg Museum has been housed in the historic „Steinpeißhaus“, a Hartberger mansion, and is run by the Hartber Historical Association on an voluntary basis. The building at Herrengasse 6 was first mentioned in a document from August 1406 and got its name in 1412 from its owner at the time, Seifried Steinpeiß. The first extant document to refer to it as the „Stainpeishaus“ dates only to 1530, however.
Various special exhibitions enrich the offer.
The museum as a venue.
The museum provides an ideal space for readings, concerts and exhibitions. Especially in the summer months, the beautiful courtyard is perfect for outdoor events – away from the street noise and yet in the middle of the city!
