The „Garden Castle of Herberstein“ is located in the municipality of Stubenberg near the Herberstein WIldlife Park. The fortified castle stands high on an east-west-facing rock. Not visible from distance, it is very difficult to access. The oldest parts of the castle date to the end of the 13th century. In the middle of the 16th century, it was expanded and transformed into a residential building with Renaissance elements. For 21 generations, the castle has been owned by the Herberstein family. In the 17th and 18th centuries, about one fifth of Styria was owned by the Counts of Herberstein. Their possession of more than a dozen castles and palaces from Istria to Bohemia, from Carinthia to Silesia made the Herbersteins a leading power in Europe.

Experience and discover more than 130 animal species from all over the world in the „Herberstein Wildlife Park“ on its extensive park grounds. Johann Maximilian I, Freiherr zu Herberstein, brought the first animals, fallow deer, from Italy in the 17th century. The private zoo was first opened to the public in the 20th century. Today the „Herberstein Wildlife Park“ is home to many exotic animals and is owned by the Federal State of Styria. It is operated according to scientific principles of zoo management.
